Ireland’s Largest Christmas Festival

Winterval is Ireland’s largest Christmas festival, held each year in Waterford, Ireland’s oldest city. For the weeks leading up to Christmas it transforms the medieval Viking Triangle and the quays along the River Suir into a full Christmas destination, drawing visitors from across Ireland, the UK and beyond. For 2026 Waterford has been named the European City of Christmas, which lifts the festival’s international profile considerably.

A quick note on the name: the festival is Winterval, not Winterville. Now in its fourteenth year, it draws in the region of 1.4 million visitors across the season and is largely free to wander, with ticketed attractions and experiences inside it.

When It Happens

Winterval 2026 runs on weekends from 13 November to 23 December, a programme of around 23 days building through the run-up to Christmas. Seeding the trip early matters, because the best-located Waterford hotels and the ticketed attractions sell out well before the December peak.

Headline Attractions

  • Waterford On Ice, an outdoor ice rink on the city quayside overlooking the River Suir.
  • The Winterval Sky Spectacular, a drone show staged over the river.
  • Christmas markets, illuminated light trails and displays threading through the medieval quarter and the Viking Triangle.
  • Santa’s Grotto and vintage family rides, including the Helter Skelter, Vintage Carousel, Ferris Wheel and Golden Gallopers.
  • Winterval Christchurch Live, live music staged inside the historic Christ Church Cathedral.
  • Seasonal food and drink and House of Waterford Crystal experiences in the city’s crystal district.

What to Expect

  • A whole-city festival. Winterval takes over Waterford’s compact, walkable centre rather than sitting in one venue, so you experience it by strolling the quays and the Viking Triangle.
  • Mostly free, with paid highlights. Wandering the markets, lights and displays is free; the ice rink, grotto, cathedral concerts and crystal experiences are ticketed.
  • Heritage and Christmas together. Waterford pairs 1,100 years of Viking history and the famous Waterford Crystal with a marquee seasonal event, which makes it a strong hook for a themed winter trip.
  • Dress for an Irish winter of cold, often wet evenings, and book early given the European City of Christmas billing for 2026.

Make a Trip of It

Waterford anchors Ireland’s Ancient East on the sunny southeast coast, within easy reach of Kilkenny, the Rock of Cashel and the Copper Coast. Winterval works beautifully as the centrepiece of a winter Ireland trip, and it sits at the Christmas end of a natural seasonal run that starts with Ireland’s Halloween festivals. Our Grand Tour of Ireland and Highlights of Ireland tour take in the southeast, and nearby Kilkenny makes an easy add-on.

On a Great British Trips itinerary we build Winterval into a wider Waterford or Ireland trip and lock in the hotels and ticketed attractions ahead of the seasonal rush.
