Europe’s Biggest Halloween, in the City Where It Began
Every year at the end of October, the walled city of Derry~Londonderry turns itself into what has been repeatedly voted the best Halloween destination on earth. Derry Halloween is Europe’s largest Halloween festival, and 2026 marks its 40th anniversary. For four days the historic streets inside the 17th-century walls fill with illuminated trails, costumed spirits, street theatre, pyrotechnics and a carnival parade that pours down to the banks of the River Foyle.
It is worth understanding why Ireland does Halloween better than anywhere else: the festival has genuine roots here. Halloween grew out of Samhain, the ancient Celtic festival that marked the end of the harvest and the turning of the year, and the north of Ireland has kept that tradition alive for two thousand years. Derry simply throws the biggest party around it.
When It Happens
Derry Halloween 2026 runs from 28 to 31 October. The programme builds across the four days and peaks on Halloween night itself.
- Awakening the Walled City Trail runs 6pm to 9pm on 28, 29 and 30 October. Over three nights the spirits rise and lead visitors through the “City of Bones” on an illuminated journey from Guildhall Square along Shipquay Street, through the Diamond and Bishop Street to the Cathedral Quarter, told through light, live performance, pyrotechnics and music.
- The Carnival Parade takes to the streets at 7pm on 31 October, followed by the festival’s signature fireworks display over the River Foyle at 8.15pm, which closes the celebration.
The Awakening trail, the parade and the fireworks are all completely free and open to the public.
What to Expect
- A city-wide spectacle, not a single venue. Derry Halloween takes over the whole walled city and the quays, so you experience it by walking the streets rather than buying a single ticket.
- Costumes everywhere. Locals and visitors dress up in huge numbers; it is one of the few places where the entire population joins in, and the atmosphere is famously warm rather than macabre.
- Family-friendly by day, theatrical by night. Daytime brings markets, storytelling and family events; the evenings turn spookier with the illuminated trail and fire performances.
- Dress for a northern autumn. Late-October evenings on the Foyle are cold and often wet, so warm, waterproof layers make a long night outdoors far more enjoyable.
- Book accommodation early. Halloween is Derry’s single busiest weekend and well-located hotels fill months in advance.
