Europe’s Largest Singles Festival
For more than 165 years, the small spa village of Lisdoonvarna in County Clare has hosted the Lisdoonvarna Matchmaking Festival, Europe’s largest singles festival and one of the most characterful events on Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way. Across the whole of September it draws around 60,000 people, aged anywhere from 18 to 80, for music, dancing and the age-old Irish tradition of matchmaking.
At the heart of it is Willie Daly, Ireland’s last traditional matchmaker, who works from the Matchmaker Bar and records hopeful visitors in his famous 150-year-old “lucky book.” Legend has it that touching the book with both hands means you will be married within six months. Whether or not romance finds you, the festival is really about the craic: back-to-back music sessions, set dancing and a village that stays up late every night of the month.
When It Happens
The Lisdoonvarna Matchmaking Festival runs for the whole of September, with the organisers confirming each year’s exact dates in the spring (the 2026 festival ran from 1 to 30 September). The village comes alive every single day, with the busiest crowds at the weekends, and each weekend tends to carry its own focus. It is a rare festival that rewards both a single big weekend visit and a quieter midweek one.
What to Expect
- A month-long village takeover. Unlike a one-weekend event, Lisdoonvarna hosts daily music and dancing throughout September in the bars, hotels and dance halls.
- Traditional matchmaking, done properly. Willie Daly and his lucky book are the real thing, carrying a tradition that predates online dating by a century and a half.
- All ages welcome. The festival is famously good-humoured and sociable, and visitors range from young travellers to lifelong regulars in their seventies and eighties.
- Music and set dancing every day, from traditional Irish sessions to country and line dancing in the afternoons and evenings.
- Book accommodation early. Lisdoonvarna is a small village and September fills up fast; staying in or near the village keeps you close to the action.
Make a Trip of It
Lisdoonvarna sits in the northwest of County Clare, minutes from the Cliffs of Moher and the extraordinary limestone landscape of the Burren, with Galway city and the ferry to the Aran Islands close by. It makes a natural highlight of a trip along the Wild Atlantic Way. Our Grand Tour of Ireland and Highlights of Ireland tour take in Clare and the west, and nearby Galway is an easy add-on.
On a Great British Trips itinerary we build the festival into a wider tour of the west of Ireland and secure the village accommodation early, which is the hard part of visiting in September.
